The Coast Plays by Different Rules
Tree Removal in Bodega Bay starts with a permit question that does not come up inland. Sonoma County's Tree Protection Ordinance applies outside the Coastal Zone. Inside it, which includes Bodega Bay, tree removal typically requires a Coastal Permit, and the county directs owners to its Planning staff for details. That is a different process, with its own review, and it is worth starting early if a tree is not an emergency.
Wind, fog and salt
Summer afternoons in Bodega Bay are often cool and windy, and sometimes foggy, as wind blows in off the ocean. No month's average temperature reaches 72 degrees. Trees here grow in constant onshore wind and salt spray, which is why many are shaped, leaning inland with their windward sides clipped short. Wind-trained trees can be surprisingly stable, because they have grown with that load all their lives. The danger comes when something changes: a neighboring tree comes down and exposes others, roots are cut for a project, or a winter storm comes from an unusual direction.
Cypress and pine near homes
Monterey cypress and pines are common around coastal homes. Both can grow large, and both can fail at weak limb unions or at the roots in saturated sand and soil. Old cypress with heavy horizontal limbs over a house or deck are a frequent concern. Some can be reduced and kept; others are past it. Monterey cypress is one of the species Sonoma County lists as protected inland, and coastal review has its own standards, so identify the tree before planning.
A small, spread-out community
The 2020 census counted 912 people in Bodega Bay, across about 8.3 square miles of land and more than 4 square miles of water. Homes range from harbor-side lots near Highway 1 to houses on the hills above town. Sonoma Coast State Beach lies to the north, Doran Regional Park to the south, and the UC Bodega Marine Laboratory nearby. Access ranges from easy to very tight, and coastal wind can limit when climbing and rigging are safe.
When it cannot wait
If a tree has failed onto a house, car or road, or is clearly about to, safety comes first. Call (707) 385-5238 and, for anything on a road or power line, the county or utility as well. Keep notes and photos of the situation; they matter for the permit side afterward.
Salt, sand and roots
Sandy coastal soil drains quickly, so roots spread wide but often shallow, and salt spray burns foliage on the windward side. Trees planted as windbreaks around homes decades ago may now be crowded and leaning on each other. Removing one tree from a tight windbreak row can expose the rest to wind they have never carried alone, so we look at the whole row, not just the tree you are worried about, and may suggest doing the work in stages.

Bodega Bay Questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Bodega Bay?
Usually you need to check. Bodega Bay is in the Coastal Zone, where tree removal typically requires a Coastal Permit. Contact Permit Sonoma's Planning staff at (707) 565-1900.
Are wind-bent cypress trees dangerous?
Not necessarily. Trees shaped by constant wind are often well adapted to it. Risk rises when roots are damaged, neighboring trees are removed, or limbs develop cracks. We assess each one.
Can you work on windy days?
Climbing and rigging stop when wind makes them unsafe. On the coast, we often plan work for calmer mornings.
Who hauls yard waste in Bodega Bay?
Recology Sonoma Marin serves unincorporated Sonoma County, including the coast. Debris from a removal is chipped and hauled as part of our estimate.
Can a cypress be reduced instead of removed?
Often, yes. Shortening long, heavy limbs and removing deadwood can lower the load on a coastal cypress while keeping its shape and wind protection. Whether that fits depends on the tree's condition and the coastal review.
