When a Crane Is the Safer Way Down
Crane-assisted tree removal is used when a tree cannot be safely climbed or there is nowhere to put the pieces. A climber ties into the tree, the crane's line is attached to a section, the section is cut free, and the crane lifts it over the house to the street or driveway, where it is cut up or chipped. Nothing swings into the roof and nothing is dropped into the garden. It costs more per hour than rope work, but on the right tree it can be both safer and shorter.
Trees that tend to need one in Santa Rosa
Tall redwoods are the most common: planted next to houses decades ago, many now stand well above the roofline with trunks too heavy to lower on ropes near a roof. Dead trees are the second group. A Douglas fir or pine that was killed by fire, drought or bark beetles dries out and becomes brittle, and climbing it is risky; in the Fountaingrove open space more than 300 dead Douglas firs were removed in 2018 alone after the Tubbs Fire. Large valley oaks and coast live oaks with long horizontal limbs over two or three yards are the third.
Access and setup
A crane needs a firm, level spot close enough to reach the tree, plus room for its outriggers. In the cul-de-sacs of Rincon Valley and Bennett Valley that is often the street; on hillside lots in Fountaingrove and Skyhawk, it may be a driveway above or below the tree. If the crane sets up on a public street, a city encroachment or street-use permit may be needed, and the cost guides put those at roughly $100 to $500. We check the setup spot, overhead wires, and the weight limits of driveways and septic areas during the estimate.
Planning the lifts
Each piece is sized to what the crane can carry at that reach, which shrinks as the boom stretches out. Heavier wood such as live oak means smaller sections than light, dry redwood. The landing zone is cleared ahead of time, and traffic control is set up if the street is involved. Because crane time is billed by the hour or day, the plan is worked out before the crane arrives so the work moves steadily.
Is a crane really needed?
Not always. A skilled climber with ropes and lowering devices can take down most trees, and we only suggest a crane when the tree's condition, size or position makes rope work unsafe or much slower. If either method would work, the quote can show both so you can see the difference.

Crane-Assisted Tree Removal Questions
Why does crane tree removal cost so much more?
You are paying for the crane, its operator, setup time and often traffic control on top of the climbing crew. ArboStar's 2026 guide puts most residential crane removals at $3,500 to $8,000. On very large trees over homes, the crane can still be the cheaper option because it cuts days of rope work down to hours.
Will a crane damage my driveway or lawn?
Outrigger pads spread the load, and mats go under them on soft ground. Older or thin driveways, septic tanks and leach fields are checked during the estimate and avoided. Wet winter ground can mean waiting a few days if the tree is not an emergency.
Do I need a permit for a crane on my street in Santa Rosa?
If the crane sets up in a public street or blocks a lane, the city may require a street-use or encroachment permit. We identify that during the estimate so it can be handled before the job date.
Can a crane be used on a hillside lot?
Often, from the street above or below the tree, as long as the crane can reach it at a weight it can lift. On some Fountaingrove and Skyhawk lots the reach is too long, and rope rigging or a combination of the two is used instead.
