Pruning That Prevents the Next Removal
Tree trimming and pruning is the work that keeps many Santa Rosa trees from becoming removals. A coast live oak with a heavy limb reaching over the house, a redwood dropping dead branches on the deck, or a valley oak with deadwood over the driveway can often be made safer with careful cuts rather than taken down. Good pruning follows the ANSI A300 standard: cuts made just outside the branch collar, no more live canopy removed than the tree can handle, and no topping, which leaves weak, fast-growing sprouts and decay.
Native oaks need a lighter hand
California's native oaks do not tolerate heavy pruning or summer watering well, and they are slow to close large wounds. On mature valley oaks and coast live oaks, the work is usually limited to removing dead, broken and crossing branches, reducing the end weight of long limbs, and raising the canopy over roofs and driveways. Because sudden oak death spreads in rain and wet weather, we prefer to schedule oak cuts near infected bay laurels for the dry months, and keep wounds few and small, since large cuts are an easy way in for decay fungi.
Fire clearance and the roofline
In the hills east of town, pruning is also fire work. Limbs over the roof catch embers and drop leaves into gutters; low branches give a ground fire a ladder into the canopy. The consulting arborist for the Fountaingrove open space recommended limbing trees up to 10 feet and pruning Douglas fir to at least a 10-foot canopy height where tree size allows. Around homes, that usually means raising canopies, clearing branches off roofs and away from chimneys, and removing dead limbs.
Wires and the service drop
PG&E trims trees around its distribution and transmission lines, keeping at least 18 inches of clearance in most areas and 4 feet in High Fire-Threat Districts. The service drop, the wire from the pole to your house, is the property owner's responsibility to keep clear. Work within 10 feet of any energized line is limited to line-clearance qualified workers, so when a branch is tangled in a line we coordinate with PG&E rather than cut it.
Timing
Most deciduous trees, including valley oak, are easiest to read and prune while bare in winter, but wet-season pruning of oaks near infected bays carries more risk. Fruit trees, redwoods and most conifers can be pruned in many seasons. Hazardous dead wood should come out whenever it is found.
Types of Pruning We Do
Each cut has a purpose that goes on the quote.
Deadwood removal
Dead, broken and hanging branches removed from the crown.
Crown thinning
Selected interior branches removed to lighten weight and let wind through, without changing the tree's shape.
Crown raising
Lower limbs removed or shortened to clear roofs, driveways, walkways and sightlines.
End-weight reduction
Long horizontal limbs on oaks shortened to a lateral branch to lower the chance of failure.
Roof and service-drop clearance
Branches cut back from the house and the owner-side wire, coordinated with PG&E where needed.

What to Expect
1. Set the goal
Clearance, safety, light or fire spacing, agreed with you at the tree.
2. Mark the cuts
We describe which limbs come off and roughly how much canopy is removed.
3. Prune
Cuts made at the branch collar; climbers work from ropes, without climbing spikes on trees being kept.
4. Clean up
Brush chipped and hauled or left as mulch.

Why Choose Us for Tree Trimming & Pruning
No topping
We reduce and thin to proper cuts instead of stubbing the tree off at a height.
Oak-aware timing
Pruning of oaks near infected bays is scheduled for dry weather where possible.
Clear scope
The quote states which limbs and how much canopy, so you know what the tree will look like.
Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
What is the difference between tree trimming and pruning?
People use the words interchangeably. Pruning usually means selective cuts for the tree's health and structure; trimming often means cutting back for clearance or looks. Either way, cuts should follow the ANSI A300 standard.
When should I prune my oak trees in Santa Rosa?
For native oaks, the dry season is generally the lower-risk time for cuts, since sudden oak death and many decay fungi spread in wet weather. Remove dead or broken limbs over targets whenever you see them. Keep pruning light on mature oaks; they do not respond well to heavy cutting.
Will PG&E trim the tree by my house for free?
PG&E trims around its own lines between poles. The service drop to your house is the owner's responsibility to keep clear, and anyone working within 10 feet of an energized line must be line-clearance qualified. Call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000 with questions about a specific line.
Can you trim a redwood to make it shorter?
Redwoods can be thinned and their lower limbs removed, but topping them causes multiple new tops that are weakly attached and can break later. If a redwood is simply too tall for its spot, removal or a reduction plan over several years is usually the better choice.
How much should be cut off a tree at once?
Most guidance for mature trees keeps live canopy removal to a modest share in one season, and less on older or stressed trees. Removing too much forces the tree to push weak sprouts and can bring on decline.
