From County Island to City Neighborhood

Tree Removal in Roseland changed in one quiet way a few years ago. For decades the neighborhood was an unincorporated pocket surrounded by Santa Rosa, under county rules. On November 1, 2017, the city annexed it. Since then, a Roseland homeowner who wants a tree taken out falls under Santa Rosa's tree code, not the county's, and street-side trees are the owner's to maintain under city rules. Some neighbors still assume the old county process applies. It does not.

Dense blocks, short drop zones

Roseland is compact. At the 2010 census, its 0.94 square miles held about 6,325 people, a density of more than 6,700 per square mile, and the average household had 3.63 people. That means narrow lots, cars parked in driveways and on the street, sheds and additions in the backyard, and neighbors close on both sides. A 50-foot tree here rarely has a clear 50 feet to fall into. Most removals are done in pieces: a climber or lift takes the limbs and top in short sections, and each piece is lowered on a rope rather than dropped onto a roof or fence.

Planning around Sebastopol Road and the trail

The neighborhood's commercial strip runs along Sebastopol Road, the SMART line crosses its east side, and the Joe Rodota Trail connects through near Highway 12. Jobs near busy frontage need more planning: where the chipper sits, how long a lane or parking space is blocked, and whether the city wants traffic control. We sort that out before the work day, not during it.

Trees we often see here

Many Roseland yards have trees planted decades ago by previous owners: fruit trees, fast-growing ash and privet, and pines or redwoods set too close to the house. Redwoods especially surprise people. They are lovely when small and can quickly crowd a foundation, lift a driveway and drop a steady rain of debris into gutters. A redwood planted three feet from a wall rarely ends well. When a tree is still young enough to move or prune instead, we will say so.

Yard waste and wood

Roseland is served by Recology Sonoma Marin, the same franchised hauler as the rest of Santa Rosa. A green cart is fine for prunings after a light trim, but a full removal produces many cubic yards of brush and several tons of trunk wood. That volume is why removal quotes include chipping and hauling as a line item. If you would rather keep the chips for garden paths or mulch around fruit trees, we can dump them in the driveway instead of hauling them off, which also trims the cleanup line on the estimate.

What to expect from an estimate

We look at the tree, measure roughly how much room there is to work, check for wires and note anything that needs a permit conversation with the city. The written estimate lists the removal, the cleanup, the hauling and the stump grinding as separate lines. If you want the wood left cut to firewood length, or the chips left for mulch, tell us and it goes on the quote. Call (707) 385-5238 or send the form. Get a free estimate

Roseland Details

  • Annexation. Roseland was an unincorporated enclave within Santa Rosa until the city annexed it on November 1, 2017, so city tree rules now apply.
  • Density. The 2010 census counted 6,325 residents on 0.94 square miles, about 6,726 people per square mile, with an average household size of 3.63 and 50.8% owner-occupied units.
  • Frontage trees under city code. Santa Rosa Section 13-32.010 makes the abutting property owner responsible for keeping street trees trimmed to 8 feet over sidewalks and 13 feet over the roadway.
  • Corridors. The commercial district runs along Sebastopol Road, SMART commuter rail passes through eastern Roseland, and the Joe Rodota Trail links to the path at Highway 12.

Roseland Questions

Roseland used to be county. Which tree rules apply now?

Santa Rosa's. Since the November 2017 annexation, permits for heritage, protected and street trees go through the city, and owners are responsible for frontage trees under city code.

My lot is small. Can a big tree still be removed safely?

Yes. On tight Roseland lots, trees are usually dismantled from the top down, with limbs and trunk sections lowered by rope instead of felled. It takes longer than dropping a tree whole, but it protects roofs, fences and the neighbor's yard.

Can you leave the wood for us?

Yes. Many households here burn wood or want it for projects. We can cut it to firewood length and stack it where you choose, and that is noted on the written estimate.
