Fire Country, Wine Country
Tree Removal in Geyserville is shaped by where the town sits. This small community of about 861 people lies on State Route 128 near Highway 101, the traditional gateway to The Geysers geothermal area to the northeast. On October 23, 2019, the Kincade Fire began in that country, near John Kincade Road, after a PG&E transmission line failed. Geyserville was among the first places evacuated. For many owners here, tree work is now part of fire planning.
Defensible space without overcutting
Sonoma County's Tree Protection Ordinance does not apply to work done under state defensible-space law (Public Resources Code 4291) or the county's own vegetation management chapter. The county's guidance is clear, though, that removal should be no more than necessary to meet those requirements. In practice, that means removing dead trees and branches near structures, raising canopies so fire cannot climb from grass into crowns, and creating spacing between tree crowns. Healthy, well-spaced oaks can usually stay. We help owners tell the difference.
Larger parcels, longer days
Most Geyserville properties are bigger than suburban lots: vineyard-edge homes, ranchettes and older houses on country roads. Trees are often bigger too, and some are far from a road. Before we quote, we want to know whether a truck can reach the tree, whether the ground is firm, and whether the job involves one tree or a dozen. Wood can be left in rounds for firewood, which the county allows without a permit on occupied parcels for personal use.
Protected species still matter
Outside the defensible-space work, the county requires a zoning permit to remove protected species at 6 inches DBH or more. That list includes valley, blue, black and interior live oaks, madrone, buckeye, bigleaf maple, ponderosa and other pines, and redwood. California bay is not on it. Valley oaks in a mapped Valley Oak Habitat zone fall under a separate ordinance with mitigation. Vineyard owners clearing land face different rules again, including use permits in oak woodland areas.
Oaks among the vines
Many Geyserville homes sit at the edge of vineyard blocks, where single valley oaks and blue oaks were left standing when the land was planted. Those old trees have lived with tillage and irrigation changes in their root zones for decades, and some decline slowly from it. A large oak with dead upper limbs over a farm road or a house is worth a close look. Often the right call is to remove the dead wood and reduce the weight of long limbs rather than take the whole tree, which also keeps the shade and habitat that make these properties what they are.
Power lines on rural roads
Overhead distribution lines run along most country roads here. Trees that could fall into a line are a fire concern, and work near energized lines is for utility-qualified line clearance crews. If your tree is close to a line, call PG&E first; we plan the rest of the work around what the utility does.

Geyserville Background
- Kincade Fire origin. The Kincade Fire began October 23, 2019, near John Kincade Road northeast of Geyserville after a 230,000-volt PG&E transmission line failed; it burned 77,758 acres.
- Small community. The 2020 census counted 861 residents and 302 households on 4.514 square miles, with a median age of 45.9.
- Defensible-space work. Sonoma County's Tree Protection Ordinance does not apply to work under Public Resources Code 4291 or County Code Chapter 13A, but removal should be no more than necessary.
- Gateway to The Geysers. Hot springs and steam vents discovered in 1847 between Calistoga and Cloverdale became The Geysers, and the town grew as its gateway on State Route 128.

Geyserville Questions
Do I need a county permit to clear trees for defensible space?
Work done to meet state or county defensible-space rules is not subject to the Tree Protection Ordinance, but the county says removal should be no more than necessary. Keep photos and notes of what you removed.
Can you reach trees far from the driveway?
Often yes, depending on terrain and ground conditions. We check access on the site visit and plan the equipment around it.
Can I keep the wood?
Yes. The county allows personal firewood cutting on parcels with an active residential use. We can leave the wood in rounds or cut to stove length.
Will removing trees lower my fire risk?
Removing dead trees and spacing out crowns near the house helps. Clearing every tree usually does not, and can let grass and brush take over, which burns faster. The aim is fuel that cannot climb or spread to the home.
How far is Geyserville from your usual area?
Geyserville is in northern Sonoma County on Highway 101, and we schedule work there like the rest of our area. Rural jobs are often grouped so one visit can handle several trees.
