Removing a Tree When There Is No Room to Drop It
Tree removal on a Santa Rosa lot almost never means one cut at the base. A redwood planted as a seedling beside a 1960s ranch house is now taller than the roofline and pushing up the patio; a valley oak in a newer subdivision spreads over two backyards; a eucalyptus row along an old fence line towers over a rebuilt home. In those spots the tree comes apart from the top down. A climber or a lift takes the limbs first, then trunk sections, and pieces that would damage something if dropped are lowered on ropes to a clear landing zone.
Reasons homeowners remove a tree
Some are clear-cut: a dead tree, a trunk with a deep crack, a fresh lean with soil heaved up on one side, or a large cavity at the base. Others are about fit. Redwoods are beautiful but thirsty and fast-growing, and in a small yard they shade out everything and lift hardscape. Older pines decline in drought years and attract bark beetles. Eucalyptus sheds bark and limbs and, after the fires, many owners want it away from the house. We tell you plainly when a problem could be solved with pruning instead.
Native oaks and permit questions
Oaks get special attention in Santa Rosa. The city regulates trees under City Code Chapter 17-24, with articles on prohibitions, permits and street trees, and the city charter calls out heritage trees as ones that should not be removed unnecessarily. In unincorporated Sonoma County, valley oaks over 20 inches in diameter in the Valley Oak Habitat district require mitigation, through replanting or an in-lieu fee, when removed. If your tree is a large native oak or redwood, or sits between the sidewalk and the curb, we raise the permit question before quoting so you can confirm it with the city or county.
Slopes, decks and narrow side yards
East Santa Rosa hillside lots in Fountaingrove, Skyhawk and Bennett Valley put trees above or below the house, often with decks and retaining walls in the way. Flat lots in Roseland or the west side may have only a 4-foot side gate. Access decides whether logs are carried out by hand, lowered over a fence, or lifted out, and it is usually the biggest single factor in price after the tree's size.
Wood, chips and stump
You choose what stays. Oak makes good firewood; redwood and eucalyptus less so. Brush is chipped and the chips can be left for mulch. If an oak or bay had sudden oak death, state guidance is to keep the wood on the property or take it to a landfill tarped. Stump grinding is quoted as its own line so you can decide whether to include it.

How a Removal Goes
1. Walk the site
We look at the tree, its lean and decay, what sits under it, wires, slope and the route out.
2. Check rules
Large oaks, heritage-sized trees and street trees get a permit question raised before pricing.
3. Written quote
Method, wood handling, stump and cleanup listed per tree with a price.
4. Take it down
Limbs, then trunk sections, rigged and lowered where needed.
5. Cleanup
Brush chipped, logs handled as agreed, surfaces raked and blown off.

Why Choose Us for Tree Removal

Clear wood options
Firewood rounds, chips for mulch or full haul-away, priced separately so you can choose.
Tree Removal Questions
How long does a tree removal take?
A small or medium tree with open access is often done in a few hours. A large oak or redwood over a house, or a tree on a steep lot where every piece is lowered and carried, can take a full day or more. The quote gives an expected time.
Can a redwood be removed from a small backyard?
Yes, in sections. Redwood wood is light for its size but trunks are tall and straight, so pieces are cut short and lowered on ropes, or a crane lifts them over the house when there is no path out. The stump is often large and may need grinding in stages.
Will removing a big tree hurt my lawn or driveway?
It can if heavy rounds are dropped or equipment crosses wet ground. We lay plywood or mats where needed, lower wood instead of dropping it near hardscape, and in a wet Santa Rosa winter may suggest waiting for the ground to firm up if the tree is not a hazard.
Does tree removal include the stump?
Only if it is on the quote. Many people grind the stump at the same visit; others leave it for later or want it cut flush. Grinding is listed as its own line with the depth and cleanup spelled out.
Can I keep the wood?
Yes. Oak splits into good firewood. If an oak or bay had sudden oak death, the state's guidance is to use the wood on your own property rather than moving it, or take it tarped to a landfill.
