Next to Sonoma, but Not in It
Tree Removal in El Verano is often confused with the city of Sonoma's process, because the two sit side by side. El Verano is a census-designated place, described as a western suburb of Sonoma, but it is unincorporated. That means the city's Tree Committee has no say here. Sonoma County's Tree Protection Ordinance applies instead, with its own species list, size thresholds and exemptions.
What the county rules mean for an El Verano yard
The county requires a zoning permit to remove a protected tree 6 inches or more in diameter at breast height. Native oaks are the species most El Verano owners ask about: valley, coast live, black, Oregon and blue oaks are all listed. Valley oaks in a mapped Valley Oak Habitat combining zone fall under a separate Valley Oak Ordinance, where most removals need a permit and mitigation. Common exemptions include non-native trees, trees under the threshold size, dead or hazardous trees within a home's defensible space, and removals needed to maintain an existing house. If a tree is exempt, the county suggests keeping photos or receipts as a record.
Small lots from a resort past
The name means summer in Spanish. Like its neighbors in the Springs, El Verano was a hot-springs resort area popular with visitors from San Francisco until the mid-20th century, and it first appeared in the census as a community in 1960. Many lots were laid out for cottages and are still small, about 1.1 square miles hold nearly 3,900 people, so trees tend to be close to houses, garages and the neighbors. Most removals here are sectional, lowering limbs and trunk pieces rather than felling.
Typical trees
Valley-floor yards like these commonly hold valley oaks, some older than the houses around them, along with walnuts, Monterey pines, redwoods planted in the last century, and fast-growing non-natives like acacia and privet. Monterey pines and redwoods planted in hot, dry inland yards often struggle in drought and decline from the top. The valley's hot summers and winter storms are hard on stressed trees.
Debris
Unincorporated Sonoma Valley is served by Recology Sonoma Marin for yard waste. Tree removal debris is chipped and hauled by us as part of the job unless you want the chips or wood left.
Hot summers, then the first big storm
The valley floor around El Verano gets hot in summer and almost all of its rain in winter. Trees that went into fall dry and stressed are the ones that shed limbs in the first strong storm of the season. Signs worth calling about include a limb hanging in the canopy after wind, bark falling off one side of the trunk, a crack running up from a branch union, or fresh sawdust-like frass at the base of a pine. Catching these early often turns an emergency removal into a planned one, with time to check permits and pick a date.

El Verano Questions
Does the city of Sonoma's Tree Committee handle El Verano?
No. El Verano is unincorporated, so tree permits go through Permit Sonoma under county rules, not the city's Tree Committee.
Is my valley oak protected?
Valley oaks 6 inches or more in diameter are protected under the county ordinance, and stricter rules apply in Valley Oak Habitat zones. Check with Permit Sonoma at (707) 565-1900.
My Monterey pine is browning at the top. Should it come out?
Top-down browning in a pine often means drought stress, beetles or root problems, and those trees can decline quickly. We can look at it and tell you whether it is worth saving.
Can you grind the stump too?
Yes. Stump grinding is listed as its own line on the estimate. It can be done right after the removal or later.
