Dead Trees Do Not Stay the Same
Dead and hazard tree removal is about timing. A tree that just died still has strong wood and can usually be climbed and taken down in sections like a live one. A year or two later, decay fungi have moved through the sapwood, branches snap without warning, and the same tree may need a lift or a crane because no one should climb it. In Santa Rosa, three things kill trees in numbers: wildfire, drought and sudden oak death, and they often work together.
After the Tubbs and Glass fires
Fire kills the living layer under the bark even where the tree still looks green. In the Fountaingrove II open space, a consulting arborist's report counted 1,121 dead trees removed in 2018, the year after the Tubbs Fire: 347 Douglas fir, 408 bay laurel, 294 native oaks, 40 madrones, 26 redwoods and 6 bigleaf maples. The report cited pests, disease and extended drought alongside fire damage. Homeowners in Fountaingrove, Coffey Park, Skyhawk and the rebuilt parts of Larkfield-Wikiup still have survivors from those fires, and some are slowly declining. Redwoods often resprout along the trunk after fire and recover; Douglas fir and pines generally do not.
Sudden oak death
Sudden oak death infects coast live oak, California black oak, canyon live oak, Shreve's oak and tanoak, and it spreads from infected bay laurel leaves. The state homeowner guide says tanoaks usually die within one to two years of infection and coast live oaks within three to four or more, and that infection lets decay fungi into the wood, raising the risk of failure. Disease alone is generally not a reason to remove an oak; a dead or failing oak standing over a house, driveway or play area is. Wood from infected trees should stay on the property or go to a landfill tarped.
Signs a tree has become a hazard
- Dead top or more than a third of the crown bare in the growing season
- Bark falling off in sheets, or mushrooms and conks at the base
- Bleeding, dark cankers on an oak trunk with a bay laurel nearby
- A deep vertical crack, or two trunks spreading apart at a V-shaped fork
- A new lean, with soil cracked or lifted on the far side
- Woodpecker holes and sawdust on pines, a sign of bark beetles in drought years
Defensible space
Dead trees near homes are also fuel. Santa Rosa's weed abatement rules already require owners in the wildland urban interface, vacant lots and parcels with more than half an acre of undeveloped land to keep grass under four inches during fire season, and dead trees and dead limbs near a house are part of the same picture. Removing them, along with ladder fuels under the trees you keep, is a large part of fire-safety work in the eastern hills.
Typical Jobs
From one dead pine to a hillside of fire-killed firs.
Fire-damaged tree removal
Scorched trees assessed for live tissue and removed when the trunk or crown is too far gone.
Sudden oak death removals
Dead or failing oaks and tanoaks removed with wood kept on site or bagged and tarped for disposal.
Drought and beetle-killed pines
Brittle dead pines taken down before tops and limbs start dropping.
Cracked, split and leaning trees
Trees with structural defects removed, or reduced if that makes them safe.
Fuel reduction around the house
Dead trees, dead limbs and ladder fuels cleared near structures.

What Dead Tree Removal Usually Costs
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Standing dead tree (HomeAdvisor) | $200 to $2,000 |
| Hollow, lighter dead tree (Bob Vila, citing HomeAdvisor and Angi) | $400 to $900 |
| Fallen dead tree (Bob Vila) | $300 to $500 |
| Oak tree, any condition (This Old House, 2026) | $200 to $2,000 |
| Hard-to-reach or unsafe tree (HomeAdvisor) | 25% to 50% above average |
| Dead tree needing a crane (ArboStar, 30 to 50 ft) | $2,000 to $4,500 |
A standing dead tree usually costs about the same as a live tree of the same size until it becomes too brittle to climb; then lifts or cranes add cost. Your written estimate is the price.
The Process
1. Assess the tree
Crown, trunk, base and root zone checked; fire scars and cankers noted.
2. Pick the method
Climbing, a lift or a crane, depending on how sound the wood still is.
3. Written price
Method, wood handling rules and cleanup listed with the price.
4. Remove and clean up
Tree taken down, infected wood handled per guidance, site cleared.

Why Choose Us for Dead and Hazard Tree Removal
We tell you if it can stay
A fire-scarred redwood that is resprouting or an infected oak far from targets may be fine to keep and watch.
Sudden oak death wood handled correctly
Infected wood stays on your property or goes to a landfill tarped.
Method matched to the wood
Brittle trees are not climbed; lifts or cranes are quoted instead.
Dead and Hazard Tree Removal Questions
How do I know if my tree is dead or just dormant?
Deciduous trees such as valley oak and bigleaf maple are bare in winter. Scratch a twig with a thumbnail: green, moist tissue underneath means it is alive. Evergreens such as coast live oak, redwood and pine that turn brown and stay brown in the growing season are likely dead or dying.
Does a dead tree have to be removed?
Not if it cannot hit anything. Standing dead trees are good wildlife habitat in open areas. One within reach of a house, driveway, fence, road or play area should come down, sooner rather than later, because it gets harder and costlier to remove as it decays.
Can a fire-scarred tree be saved?
Some can. Redwoods and some oaks resprout and recover; Douglas fir and pines with most of the trunk circumference killed rarely do. The amount of dead bark around the trunk, crown dieback and new growth over the following seasons tell the story.
Is sudden oak death a reason to remove my oak?
On its own, usually not. The California Oak Mortality Task Force says disease spread alone is generally not a valid reason. Removal makes sense when the oak is dead or so decayed it is likely to fail onto something. Removing bay leaves within 15 feet of a healthy oak's trunk may reduce its risk.
Can I burn the wood from a dead tree?
Firewood use on your own property is fine and is the state's suggested option for sudden oak death wood. Open pile burning within Santa Rosa requires a city permit and suitable weather, and fire officials generally allow it only after fire season ends.
