A Small Place With Big Trees
Tree Removal in Fulton is a different job from the same work a mile south. This small community of about 551 people sits just outside Santa Rosa city limits, so it is unincorporated Sonoma County. Parcels tend to be larger, many with old walnut, oak, eucalyptus or windbreak trees that predate the houses, and the county, not a city, decides which ones need a permit to cut.
The county list matters here
Permit Sonoma requires a zoning permit to remove protected species at 6 inches in diameter or more, measured at breast height. The list is broad: valley, blue, coast live, black and Oregon oaks, plus California black walnut, buckeye, madrone, bigleaf maple, Oregon ash, redwood, cottonwoods, alders, willows and several pines and cypresses. Eucalyptus is not on it. Large protected hardwoods of 36 inches or more, or redwoods of 48 inches or more, generally need a use permit, which is a heavier process. There are exemptions, including removals needed to maintain an existing home, dead or hazardous trees within a structure's defensible space, and removals an insurer requires within 100 feet of an occupied building. The county suggests keeping photos or written records of any exempt removal.
Old farm trees
Fulton's post office opened in 1871, and the area was farmland long before it was anything else. A chicken processing plant ran here from the 1960s until 2010. On parcels with that kind of history, trees were often planted for shade, windbreaks or crops and then left alone for decades. Windbreak rows of eucalyptus or cypress can be the hardest work: tall, close together and shedding heavy limbs. Old black walnuts are another common question; they are on the county's protected list, so the species matters before the size does.
Rail line and roads
SMART trains run on the tracks through Fulton, and River Road and the Old Redwood Highway carry steady traffic. A tree that could reach the tracks or a busy road is planned differently from one in the middle of a pasture. In some cases, sectional removal with a lift is safer even when there seems to be plenty of room.
Wildlife and timing
Open land around Fulton draws hawks, owls and songbirds, and old trees with cavities are prime nesting spots. The county's guidance notes that the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act can also apply to tree work. Spring is nesting season, so if a removal is not urgent, scheduling it for late summer, fall or winter avoids disturbing an active nest. When we find a nest during a site visit, we tell you before any work is booked, and if a tree is an immediate hazard, safety comes first.

Tell us roughly how many trees, what kind if you know, and whether there is vehicle access to them. Larger parcels often benefit from doing several trees in one visit. The written estimate lists each tree, the method, cleanup and hauling. Call (707) 385-5238 or use the form. Get a free estimate
Fulton at a Glance
- Unincorporated. Fulton lies just north of Santa Rosa city limits, so Sonoma County's Tree Protection Ordinance applies: a zoning permit is needed for protected species at 6 inches DBH or more.
- Small population. The 2020 census counted 551 residents on about 1.9 square miles, roughly 283 people per square mile, with a median age of 45.1.
- Farm history. The post office opened in 1871, the community is named for founders Thomas and James Fulton, and a chicken processing plant operated from the 1960s until 2010.
- Rail corridor. Railway lines run through the community's boundaries and are used by SMART commuter trains, which matters when a tree could fall toward the tracks.

Fulton Questions
Is a eucalyptus protected in Fulton?
No. Permit Sonoma's list of protected species does not include eucalyptus. That said, tall eucalyptus near roads, rails or buildings still needs careful planning because of how heavy and brittle their limbs can be.
I want to clear an old walnut. Do I need a permit?
If it is a California black walnut 6 inches or more in diameter, the county generally requires a zoning permit unless an exemption applies. English walnuts grown for nuts are a different species. We can help you identify which you have.
Can you do several trees across my property at once?
Yes, and on larger Fulton parcels that is usually more efficient. The estimate lists each tree separately so you can pick which ones to do now.
Is stump grinding included?
Only if you want it. We list stump grinding as its own line on the estimate. On pasture or rough ground, some owners leave stumps cut low; near a house or driveway, grinding is usually worth it.
