Healdsburg Does Things Its Own Way

Tree Removal in Healdsburg comes with a detail that sets it apart from the rest of the county: the power lines are not PG&E's. The City of Healdsburg runs its own electric department, serving 5,793 meters over about 56 miles of high-voltage line, roughly half underground and half overhead, on about 1,220 poles. When a tree is near an overhead line in town, the call about de-energizing or line clearance goes to the city, not to a regional utility. We do not cut near energized lines; we plan the job with the line owner.

Rain and river soils

Healdsburg averages about 42 inches of precipitation a year, noticeably more than Santa Rosa. The city sits on the Russian River, and much of the land near the water is deep, soft alluvium. Cottonwoods, willows, alders and box elders do well there and can grow large and fast. They also tend to drop heavy limbs and, in saturated winter soil, can fail at the roots. River-adjacent removals sometimes need to wait for drier ground so equipment does not rut the yard.

Fitch Mountain and the hillside edge

On the east side of town, Fitch Mountain rises above the river bend, and the 173-acre Fitch Mountain Open Space Preserve covers part of it. Homes on its lower slopes and along the river road often sit under mixed oak, bay, madrone and Douglas-fir. Those trees bring the same concerns as other wildland-edge lots: dead and dying trees near the house, limbs over roofs, and sudden oak death in tanoak and oak stands. Steep driveways and narrow roads make these the jobs where a crane or careful rigging is sometimes the safest approach.

Fire close to home

The 2019 Kincade Fire forced the evacuation of Healdsburg and destroyed the Soda Rock Winery outside town. The following summer, the Walbridge Fire's evacuation zone reached the rural hills between Healdsburg and the coast. Many owners have since taken a harder look at the trees closest to their homes. A common request is to clear out dead conifers and lower limbs, and to remove trees that overhang roofs, while keeping healthy oaks.

Trees in the street strip

Older Healdsburg blocks often have big street-side trees whose roots have lifted sidewalks and whose crowns reach over the road. Before any work on a tree in the public strip, check with the city about ownership and permission; the answer decides who pays and who does the work.

Older town, tighter lots

Healdsburg incorporated in 1867, and the blocks around the Plaza hold some of the oldest homes in northern Sonoma County, on narrow lots with mature trees and little room to work. Census QuickFacts puts the median owner-occupied home value at about $950,100, and 22.6% of residents are 65 or older. For many owners, the priority is a clean job with no surprises: protected garden beds, fences intact, and debris gone the same day. Recology Sonoma Marin is the city's hauler for normal yard waste; whole-tree debris is chipped and hauled as part of the estimate.

Healdsburg Questions

Who do I call about a tree touching power lines in Healdsburg?

Inside the city's service area, the City of Healdsburg Electric Department owns the lines, not PG&E. Contact the city first. Never try to trim a branch that is touching or near a line.

Can you remove a cottonwood near the river?

Yes. Cottonwoods are fast-growing and can drop large limbs. On soft riverbank soil, we may recommend timing the work for drier months so equipment does not damage the ground.

My lot near the Plaza is tiny. Is removal still possible?

Yes. On narrow downtown lots, trees are taken down in sections and lowered by rope, and debris is carried to the street for chipping.

Does Healdsburg have its own tree permit rules?

Yes. The city's Land Use Code includes a heritage tree protection article. Check with city planning staff before removing a large or native tree, especially an oak.
